What are Registered Designs?
A monopoly right protecting the outward appearance of the product. Protects the features of shape or configuration, pattern or ornament applied to an article that appeal to the eye.
Key Issues
- Valid for five years and may be extended in five year renewals to a maximum of twenty five years.
- Must have significant eye appeal, and must be new.
Why register a design?
- Provides protection of a shape of a product or its packaging. Very useful when the shape of a product or packaging is a main distinguishing feature.
- Can be sold, hired or licensed, thereby generating revenue.
